Using our essential oils topically can be beneficial for skincare, relaxation, and addressing specific concerns like muscle soreness or skin irritation. Here’s a guide on how to apply our essential oil blends safely on your skin:
1. Dilute the Essential Oil Blend
Essential oils are highly concentrated and should never be applied directly to the skin without dilution. To dilute:
- Carrier Oils: Mix essential oils with carrier oils like coconut oil, jojoba oil, sweet almond oil, or olive oil.
-
Dilution Ratio:
- For adults, a safe dilution ratio is 2-3 drops of essential oil per 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil (1-2% dilution).
- For children or sensitive skin, use only 1 drop of essential oil per 1 teaspoon (5 ml) of carrier oil (0.5-1% dilution).
2. Always do a Patch Test
Before applying essential oils on a large area such as for a massage, always do a patch test to ensure you don’t have an allergic reaction to the oil or blend.
- Apply the diluted oil on a small patch of skin (e.g., inside the wrist or elbow).
- Wait for 24 hours to see if any irritation or redness occurs.
3. Application Areas
- Massage: Use diluted essential oils on areas like the back, neck, or legs to relieve tension or muscle soreness. Avoid sensitive areas like the eyes, mucous membranes, and broken skin.
- Aromatherapy: Apply on pulse points such as the wrists, neck, or behind the ears for mood enhancement and relaxation. You can even add a few drops to your bath (Diluting them in a Carrier Oil will help with dispersion in the water)
4. Massage Techniques
- When applying essential oils topically for massage, use gentle circular motions.
- Start with small amounts and add more if necessary.
-
Citrus oils can benefit the skin. Lime and Grapefruit help to clarify the skin, reduce blemishes, and balance oil production. Orange adds a nourishing and brightening effect, while Lemongrass has astringent properties that can tone and tighten the skin.
However; they can make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sun exposure for 12-24 hours after applying Citrus Burst to exposed skin in a massage.
5. Aftercare
- After applying essential oils, avoid touching your eyes or other sensitive areas.
- If you experience any irritation, wash the area with soap and warm water, and apply more carrier oil to dilute the essential oil further.
By following these steps, you can enjoy the topical benefits of essential oils without risking skin irritation or sensitivity.
